General Banter #193, Is Bus Surfing The New Fatalistic Trend Now? (My Soapbox Rant About Public Transportation)

Do you remember the movie “Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof”? Part of the exploitation genre of horror, the intention of the film was to show over-the-top deaths portrayed in the form of a car-based assailant as part of the gimmick. It’s a fairly good film if you haven’t seen it (meant for adults given the movie rating), but the scene that makes me cringe is when the woman has her leg out of the car window, and she becomes paraplegic shortly before perishing in the car collision in the middle of the movie. This is one of the reasons why your parents tell you to keep your arms and legs inside of the car door when driving. This is because you can hit a street sign, another car, or any other object at high-speed rendering you disabled and dependent on physical assistance for the rest of your life because of a careless mistake. That life lesson appears to be missed on some New York commute riders who appear to be tempting fate with getting on the tops of public transit buses and coasting for views.

To give a not-so-humble opinion on public transportation, it is a privilege, not a right, just like private transportation services. Poor conduct with a private transportation companies can get you banned from using companies for the rest of your life, whereas public transportation has to consider that any person who pays a ticket and isn’t posing an immediate problem should be allowed access to the vehicle. This usually means that public transportation sees the cracks of most poorly behaved peoples’ conduct start to show whenever a ride takes too long, something is vaguely annoying them, or they are attempting to start a provocation. In reality, barring some of the most violent and dangerous offenders who are restricted to the most rudimentary of living standards anyway, these individuals are often punished just enough to where they mind their manners just until they get off of the bus. Nevertheless, it’s rare for people to openly show such nonchalant behavior when potentially endangering their own lives and the motorists below as they don’t want to lose their access to cheap public transportation.

Regarding the life-threatening danger that these individuals are putting themselves in by getting on top of buses and videotaping the experience (and being dumb enough to post it online for views), what happens if a narrow tunnel comes along? They aren’t going to fit through the tunnel or will be scraped up fairly badly if they do to which no one will know they are injured until the bus stops, and the bus driver more than likely will catch flak for what is a behavioral problem for the attendees. Whereas a polite and just society would put a suspension on these riders’ ability to ride the bus until they learn safety measures and/or pay a penance for endangering the motorists who have to worry about them falling onto their cars, the bus driver would probably be blamed because they climbed to the roof on his watch ignoring the fact that he has to drive the bus, watch the mirrors, mind the tolls, and keep updated on other parts of the job simultaneously. This also ignores the audacious claim that some of these social media stars’ families might make saying the city owes them money for lack of safety features preventing this from happening. The main thing that keeps this from happening on a regular basis is common sense and the prospect of meeting a police officer instead of getting home that night.

Then again, this appears to be New York City where crime follows delinquency in the hopes of Democrats chasing the vote. While it appears that this will likely continue so long as the person behind this channel continues to upload their escapades on public transportation, state legislatures can at least take the following precaution: defend public bus drivers from frivolous lawsuits stemming from disorderly passengers abusing safety mechanisms like the safety hatch. If someone is inane enough to risk their own safety as a consenting adult on the top of a bus moving faster than some land animals without permission or safety equipment, it shouldn’t be the taxpayers who are forced to front the medical bills for their actions. If these types of actions lead to potential amputations and woundings for able-bodied adults because of disregarding safety violations, those individuals should still plan on finding a career which they can work with their functional limbs.
