Democratic Banter #349, Briahna Joy Gray Fired From The Hill After A Disrespectful Interview With The Sister Of A Hamas Hostage

The anti-Semitism on the right, as much one may lament the fringe actors such as Nick Fuentes, will never compare in this modern age to the left where casual anti-Semites such as Briahna Joy Gray can have a platform with institutional power and dismiss legitimate grievances committed against vulnerable groups like Jewish Americans. Well, at least she had a platform. After a disastrous interview where she rolled her eyes and dismissed the general claims by the sister of a hostage of Hamas attackers from the October 7th attacks, her anti-Semitism became too much for The Hill: Rising to tolerate regarding their programming and they dismissed her. She then proceeded to lambast her former network as part of the establishment media that engaged in heavy censorship of alternative voices, a cop-out excuse when considering the fact that Gray only had to show a moderate level of respect for opposing voices to keep her job. Let me offer a realistic take on what happened.

When you are interviewing someone that has undergone a tragedy or traumatic event, your first goal is to come across respectfully. Obviously, the goal is to ask important questions and to inquire about points that you as the anchor are interested in uncovering, but this has to be done with fairness to the person being interviewed. This partially explains why so few Republicans will go on left-leaning shows and so few Democrats will go on right-leaning shows, as the public discourse has gotten so vitriolic that both sides are worried about being treated with disdain when they would like to articulate their perspectives without immediate chastisement. However, the eyes rolling and attempt at justifying 9/11 because of the alleged “occupation of Palestine”, something that has no basis in reality especially after the October 7th attacks, was a step that cemented that Gray’s anti-Semitism would extend to any future Jewish speakers on the show raising negative headlines about the show itself.

Beyond the ideological tangent, however, there is also the unfortunate entitlement personality on display from Gray where she bragged how she couldn’t get fired after people had been begging for her to be fired for past statements. The Hill had previously gone to bat defending her right to unpopular speech so long as she followed a basic code of conduct that was also expected of her colleague Robby Soave on the show, something that he regularly is respectful of and adheres to. For Gray to make the claims publicly on Twitter that she can’t be fired to insult her critics, misbehave on air, and then blame her former network when she crossed a line that was too far for even a network that wanted to defend her to defend, that signals to other networks that she isn’t the stable anchor that can be relied upon to draw viewers in and expand the audience. Instead, she’s the powder keg that could potentially set off a new lawsuit in the style of Tucker Carlson with all of the entitlement of someone who tasted fame, wasn’t ready for the consequences, and is soon to realize she’s further away from getting mainstream acceptance than she was previously.

However, it’s for the best that Gray is let go from Rising as that frees up the network to appoint literally any other sane rational commentator from the left, right, libertarian, or other place on the political spectrum. It’s one thing to be virulently critical of war as a principle and be misled by TikTok propaganda, something many young people are unfortunately misled by. However, Gray is a grown woman capable of looking up the consequences of Hamas’ actions against Israeli citizens and there were credible actions of murder and rape by Hamas that the Israelis had to respond back against. To simply treat a woman who is missing her family member in this egregious manner as a member of the media is against how most average people would talk to the victim of a violent crime, so someone being backed by a major network should be held to a higher standard like Gray was in this instance.
