Whenever people wonder why there aren’t that many LGBT politicians, the response that can be offered can be explained in a series of predicated points: the politicians that usually are elected are either attempting to placate to the religious right so they are discovered to be gay after the fact and aren’t accepted as normal or are part of the left and become embroiled in some scandal that is unbecoming of a scandal. In the case of George Santos, he was a strange outlier that managed to escape both characterizations, but New York Republicans still wouldn’t want to be expelled from Congress if it were them personally. Nevertheless, the latter point about the left-leaning politician being banished from the political realm after unbecoming behavior appears to have panned out yet again with Daniel Gomez del Barrio in Spain being featured in a video eating his own excrement. This would be a great time if you are squeamish to find a more milquetoast article to read if this is unpleasant to read.

            After the revelation of the video, del Barrio resigned as a Councilor for Illescas after being forced by the mayor of the town south of Madrid after the video was released. The video was part of a larger adult set-up where he wanted to be “exposed, humiliated, and degraded” and used as a “urinal”, language that most adult performers wouldn’t even subject themselves to depending on the content they were making. While this would be shocking in most cases, Spain literally elected a former gay adult performer as a mayor for a small town in a municipal election on the conservative aisle just a few years ago reflecting that the country’s tolerance for sexuality is different than here in the United States where personal image is more highly cultivated and cherished at the cost of individual autonomy. Nevertheless, the consumption of human waste was probably the point where even the left-winger wasn’t able to defend his actions as being innocuous fun.

            The reason I shine a light on this story, as gross it is, is that it reflects how the general public is turning heavily against the cause of LGBT rights with young people growing up being too tolerant of gender pseudoscience or being blatantly anti-LGBT to the right of some baby boomers and religious types. The disparity between the two groups is enormous and is reactionary based on what is being peddled online with stories like these not helping to make moderate, family-oriented LGBT politics the way forward for the movement. This comes as the next election could see the classical liberalism that was sought during the 2010s being replaced by a heavy influence by The Heritage Foundation which has already worked to undo much of the work on AIDS progress globally. While the sexual component of being gay will always be taboo to straight people, despite the hypocrisy of straight people engaging in the same activity, the act of coprophagia is a fast way to make enemies out of neutral observers or possible allies who would suggest that innocent LGBT people should be left alone.
